Fabric Care

In today's busy world, we would all like to own only wash-and-wear clothing. And, generally speaking, our Hawai'ian print fabrics will fit that desire.

Cotton Fabrics
For the fabrics that we offer online, we give brief care instructions on the individual fabric pages. But following are some tips to extend the life & beauty of your vivid new fabrics.

Washing in cold water with a standard detergent that DOES NOT contain whiteners will ensure that the colors remain bright and any metallic accents retain their shine.

As for drying our cotton fabrics, we recommend a five-minute fluff followed by hanging to air dry. To fluff, simply put the fabric, garment, or finished product into the dryer with a full load, let it run up to five minutes, then remove it and hang it. This is particularly important for fabrics with metallic accenting, as the heat from the dryer will break down the metallics, causing them to flake off and disappear quickly.

Specialty Fabrics
Specialty fabric care is given on the individual fabric pages, as well, with any information that we feel is important. Remember, we work with these fabrics in our design department, so we have hands-on experience in pre-shrinking, washing, & cutting them.

Generally speaking, all of the silks that we sell are washable. DO NOT use Woolite with silks, as it contains certain bleaching agents that will damage silk. Instead, use an unenhanced soap, such as Ajax dish soap or Dr. Bronner's unscented Baby Castille. If you decide to dry clean your silks, that's fine. But remember, you must choose one method or the other -- because mixing the methods may damage silks. ("Dry cleaning" is not dry: it is done in cleaning chemicals; these chemicals may interact negatively with your soap.)

Additionally, with some silks, keep in mind that washing rather than dry cleaning may alter the hand & drape. If, for example, you have an Indian doupion that you want to keep crisp, dry clean. On the other hand, if you wash & machine dry a raw silk noil, it will then become buttery soft. You may want to keep this mind BEFORE cutting, so that you can pre-shrink properly for the project.
